A Wee Bit of Brass History

MacNulty and Gilmour, The Peoples Store, Banff, Alberta

This was Jim's Great Grandfather's store (on Jean's side). This was where his Grandmother, Sobe, was born. Her real name was Etoile, why she was called Sobe is unknown to me.Actually why she was called Etoile is rather a mystery too. Heather E, aren't you glad the E doesn't stand for Etoile? Can you imagine the abuse you'd get from Jamie!
But I digress. Jim found this picture the other day and I thought some of you might get a kick out of it. As you can see things in Banff have changed just a tad.

Just to update on the Brass history.... "Sobe" derived from the fact that my mom, Sharon, could never pronounce Etoile, she called her grandma "sobe" and so it goes...
The Etoile name came from the fact(or fiction) that my Great Great Grandmother was travelling on a train with baby Sobe (who at 2 weeks old was apparently still nameless) and some woman asked my GGG what the baby's name was. She said we havent named her yet. And the woman, who was French, said she is such a bright happy baby, you should call her Etoile, or "star" in french.

Wow! What how cool is that to be able to see Banff then and now! Very neat.
